Frozen Hell - Friday, February 26, 2010

Yes, I know what you’re saying, we’ve had this game before.. but thats not quite true, as this is Shopping Cart Hero 2.  The concept is of course the same, but there are a bunch more upgrades for you to get stuck into, including the ability to pole vault with your trolley..  using a baseball bat.

Go play Shopping Cart Hero 2 now!

Steam beta client brings UI changes

Frozen Hell - Wednesday, February 24, 2010

All you need to do if you’ve already got Steam installed is follow this link and pick the “2010 UI Update” option in the beta participation section.  If you experience issues, you can always roll back to the original version by opting back out of the beta if you so choose.

Valve have a web page setup that showcases the new features and changes that they have introduced into this beta version which you can check out by going here.  One of the best new features in my opinion looks to be the  ability to group games into separate categories, so I can hide the games I have in my list that I won’t ever play again (i.e. FEAR2) or that I got in one of the recent Christmas specials packs that I’m not ever going to be interested in playing (e.g. Brian Lara Cricket 2007).

So if you’re a bit sick of the current tired looking Steam interface, then its probably worth having a look.

Blizzard reveals last raid instance of Wrath

Frozen Hell - Tuesday, February 23, 2010

The Ruby Sanctum will be accessible via one of the portals beneath Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight in the same manner that the Obsidian Sanctum currently is.  The instance will contain a single boss called Halion who will have lieutenants that you will have to defeat prior to engaging him.  Unlike Sartharion in the Obsidian Sanctum, the encounter won’t be structured with you engaging the lieutenants for the hard mode or heroic version of the encounter.

The ilevel of the gear that Halion will drop will be on par with the loot that the Lich King drops, so its probably safe to assume he’ll be at the same level as the Lich King in terms of difficulty.  There will be a heroic mode for Halion as well, which will be accessible via the normal toggle option in the same manner that heroic modes are accessed within Icecrown Citadel currently.

Blizzard as usual won’t give a date on when the new instance will be released, but they have confirmed that it won’t be included with the next patch – 3.3.3 – which is currently in testing on the public test realms (PTRs).   But they have also confirmed that it won’t be as long away as the bridging patch to Cataclysm which is likely to be given the 4.0 patch number.

C&C 4 – Tiberian Twilight

wob - Friday, February 19, 2010

I love the beta of this game.  I’m massive C&C fan .. hell I’ve been playing Westwood RTS’s since Dune 2.  This is a complete deviation from the standard resource mining and base building effort though.  Remember RA3?  Remember how it sucked hard?  C&C4 takes all the suck from RA3, spits on it and then sets it on fire.

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail here, but suffice it to say the multiplayer (once properly balanced and stabilised) is going to be mad.  All the cheap tank rushing tactics are easily countered, and it’s impossible to completely eliminate an opponent until the end of a match.

The game is due out in March, but if you can get hold of a beta key I highly recommend having a go.

Ubisoft requiring active net connection to play

wob - Thursday, February 18, 2010

We’re talking single player games here.  Assassins Creed 2 (PC) being the big one.  This article over at computerandvideogames.com (what a domain..) informs us the rumours are true – Ubi’s newest DRM solution will require an active internet connection to play their games.  If you lose your internet for a second, your router reboots, your telephone line is abducted by Elvis, then the game will kick you out and you’ll lose any unsaved data.

Sounds like a bad idea to me.  I’m usually all about the multiplayer gaming, but what do I do if I can’t get online for some reason (not because iiNet is broken, some other reason.. maybe Elvis again).  Go outside? No dammit, I bust out the single player games.

Hopefully there’ll be sufficient public backlash to make them re-think this.. hopefully.

28 billion dead zombies and counting

Frozen Hell - Friday, February 12, 2010

The exact number is 28,981,249,043, or as Valve put it, that’s 4.62 times the entire population of the world, if they had been killed and turned into zombies.

With that news out of the way, Valve are also working on the first DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, which will have the survivors from the original Left 4 Dead crossing paths with the survivors of Left 4 Dead 2.  The DLC will be titled “The Passing”, and should be out soon, with no fixed release date being available just yet.

Alan Wake gets a release date

Frozen Hell - Friday, February 12, 2010

.. so you’ve kept reading, well the official release date is the 18th of May for the US and the 21st of May for Europe.  So which one of those dates we get it in Australia is anyone’s guess, but its safe to assume we’ll have it around the same time.  If you’re wondering what this Alan Wake thing is all about, check out our feature on the game from early last year.

As we’ve previously reported, the game is an Xbox 360 exclusive at this stage, but there have been suggestions it may come to PC eventually.  I have to admit I was disappointed by the announcement part way through last year that said the game was to be an Xbox 360 only title, but the game really does look good (and I’m not just talking about the graphics), so it may be enough to tempt me to dust off my Xbox 360 and actually plug it in again.
