EA has confirmed that the upcoming and in development - Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic will in fact be an MMO title to compete with the likes of the all-ruling World of Warcraft.

This is not the first Star Wars MMO title, the gaming public may remember (or rather, love to forget) Sony's Star War Galaxies which was released in 2003 with a promising game mechanic and strong subscription base, however suffered a humugnous blow in 2005 with the essentially what was a redesign of the game's structure in attempt to attract a broader player base (read: 15 year old boys). As a result, this triggered a mass exodus of the original subscriber base to leave SWG with a beaten and tattered subscription base of around 100,000 - with less than 20,000 active players.

The original KotOR producer - BioWare is working on the title, other games that BioWare have produced include Mass Effect (and its upcoming sequels) and the Neverwinter Nights series. With that in mind, its safe to say that KotOR is in relatively safe and experienced hands.
