Minecraft 1.5 Coming This Week
Scott Rose - Monday, April 18, 2011

Notch mentioned on his personal blog that Patch 1.5 for Minecraft will hopefully be coming this week.
Two features that he mentions coming in Patch 1.5 are Powered Rails and when a Pig gets hit by lightning it will transform into a Zombie Pigman.
“We were aiming at releasing 1.5 this week, but no.”
“But next week!” – Notch (Posted Last Week)
As with previous patches to Minecraft, the 3FL Minecraft server may have to revert back to a vanilla state for a few days whilst the server mods are updated.

Is additional gaming content worth it?
Frozen Hell - Wednesday, May 5, 2010
Expansion packs, downloadable content (aka DLC), map packs and other names used to describe additional content seem to have increased in popularity these days, particularly with big name game releases pretty much being guaranteed to include some type of additional content that generally you can be expected to pay for.
There are exceptions to the rule of course, with developers such as Valve having shunned this for some of their games so far, particularly with the Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead titles that have both received significant gameplay updates and additional content that was released for free (at least for PC gamers).
Valve’s title Team Fortress 2 originally released back in 2007 still receives semi-regular updates with new content that do change the gameplay to mix things up a bit, with most of the game’s classes having received additional achievements and unlocks. But these type of examples seem to be few and far between particularly for games that don’t operate as a subscription model.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are examples of a trend towards charging users for content that doesn’t do anything other than change the visual elements of their character. A recent example of this was the opening of Blizzard’s online store that sells in-game items for World of Warcraft, which up until the most recent addition was limited to in-game “pets”.
But the latest addition (shown in the picture accompanying this article) is a so-called “Celestial Steed” flying mount. That particular item cost $US25 and lead to a queue on the Blizzard store of in excess of 140,000 (which won’t even be the total number of purchases) when it first became available. Its probably safe to assume that Blizzard made in excess of $5 million on a single in-game vanity item, which is more than some smaller developers even make for selling their entire game.
World of Warcraft could be considered a somewhat unique case, as its users can be quite fanatical (I used to play it myself) due its very addictive type of gameplay. But its certainly not alone in charging real money for items that only change visual elements of your in-game character, with the latest title in the Battlefield series by publisher Electronic Arts – Bad Company 2 – soon to introduce a set of class skins that will be offered as a paid addon to the game.
Console gamers have had to suffer with this system for a while now, with virtually all add-on content that is made available almost 100% guaranteed to cost money to obtain through their respective console portals. As primarily a PC gamer, this trend seems rather worrying, especially when some of the content really is limited at best or just plain pointless (a flying, sparkly horse, srsly…).
With all of the big-name publishers on-board with this idea of charging customers for additional content that arguably should be given for free, or should’ve been included with the original game, its doubtful that this concept is going to die anytime soon.
So what do you think? Have you been burnt in paying for additional gaming content that wasn’t worth it? What do you think is reasonable to pay for additional gaming content, and what do you think you should get for your money?
