15 Minutes of Mechwarrior Online

Months after teasing us with just a few concept art images and snippets of video, developer Piranha Games has met with IGN to release over 15 minutes of Mechwarrior Online gameplay footage.

The 6 videos show each class of Mech in action, from the lightly armoured Scout class to the mighty Assault class behemoths, and a full 6 minutes looking at the MechLab where we’ll be customising and crafting our mechanised dogs of war.

Mechwarrior Online is set to be released later this year as a Free2play PC game, but no specific details about their business model have been released yet. I’m expecting news of their micro-transaction options for various Mech hats any day now.

Hawken Begins Closed Beta Registration

We finally have the first solid bit of news on the release of Hawken – the awesome indie mech combat game inspired by the old Mechwarrior series.

The game will be released as a free-to-play in-browser game on December 12.

I assume most of you are now sobbing uncontrollably because you’ve just realised it’ll be another 10 months before you can jump in the cockpit of a mech and start melting faces, but don’t cry! Firstly because mech pilots don’t cry, but secondly because the closed beta sign-ups for Hawken have begun.

Head over to playhawken.com and register your interest for the beta. If you can get 3 friends to sign up through your unique enlistment URL, you get to reserve your username ahead of the beta. Don’t be one of those losers who has to add numbers to their name because it’s taken.

MechWarrior: Living Legends update 0.2.0

Of major note in this patch – the ‘Frostbite’ map and changes to Extremity and Inferno to make them not suck.  Inferno is now unfortunately large though – so without a full server there’s a lot of travel time in between explosions.

Along with new mechs and weapons, they’ve also added in AMS (Anti Missile System), which cuts down on the long distance LRM battles a fair bit.  Oh and it’s awesome watching your little shoulder laser mow through a bunch of missiles enroute.

MechWarrior: Living Legends – Crysis Mod

MechWarrior: Living Legends puts you back in the cockpit of a giant mech.. finally!  This is something that’s been missing from the gaming community for years.  The mod is only in beta and has a few issues still – but it’s most definitely playable.

If you’re a fan of giant mech combat (or even annoying elemental combat) then you owe it to yourself to check this out.   You’ll need a copy of Crysis, but the mod itself is free.  There’s a post in the forums that explains where to go to get it and install it here, along with a couple of game play vids that should get you excited.
