Call of Duty

Call of Duty is a First Person Shooter FPS video game that was released in November 2003. The game was developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision.

The game includes a single player campaign mode and a multiplayer mode with new maps being made available with game patches. The multiplayer modes include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Retrieval, Behind Enemy Lines, Search & Destroy and Headquarters. These will be explained in depth below.

Numerous versions of Call of Duty have been released for PC including a Collector's Edition (with strategy guide and soundtrack), Game of the Year (GOTY) Edition (with game updates) and the Deluxe Edition (with United Offensive expansion).

Gameplay: Single Player

Call of Duty is not played with one character throughout the entire game. It takes the view of 3 different soldiers. They are an American soldier Pvt. Martin of the US 101st Airborne Division, British soldier Sgt. Evans of the British 6th Airborne Division and Special Operations Executive, and Soviet soldier Sgt. Voronin of the 13th Guards Rifle Division.

Throughout the missions the character is accompanied by computer controlled allies who will lay down covering fire, dragging wounded comrades to safety and contribute helpful dialogue throughout the game. This gives the game a team based feel without the hassle of commanding the other characters directions or orders.

The American campaign begins with Pvt. Martin parachuting into France as a pathfinder of the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day for the Battle of Normandy. Other missions in the campaign include a night assault on the town of Sainte-Mère-Église, a defence of the town against a counter attack by German Panzer units, the Brécourt Manor Assault, two special missions to rescue captured British officers and ends with fighting for control of bunkers around Bastogne.

The British campaign begins with Sgt. Evans of the British Special Air Service (SAS) assisting in the capturing of Pegasus Bridge, sabotage anti-air defences around the Eder Dam, sabotage the German battleship Tirpitz and ends with a sabotage mission of a V-2 rocket base.

The Soviet campaign begins with Sgt. Voronin in the Battle of Stalingrad with a recreation of the battle for Pavlov's House, close combat in an underground sewer system followed by a role as a tank commander.

Gameplay: Multiplayer

The multiplayer mode of this game is comparable to other FPS video games out with various modes and maps and the ability to have up to 32 players online playing on one server.

Deathmatch

In Deathmatch, players verse each other in a free for all with a designated time limit. The game ends at the end of the specified time limit. At the end of the game the winner is the person with the most points (kills or frags). Players can select either Axis or Allies and select any available weapon.

Team Deathmatch

In Team Deathmatch, players are either on the Axis or Allies team and verse each other with a designated time limit. The game ends at the end of the specified time limit. At the end of the game the winner is the team with the most points (kills or frags).

A feature of Call of Duty Team Deathmatch is that the entry after death (spawn) changes depending on the location of fellow teammates compared to regular FPS games that generally use a rally point system. This makes the possibility to drive the enemy out of a position and have teammates begin to spawn there at the same time the enemy will begin to spawn in a different place.

Retrieval

In Retrieval, the object must be retrieved within a round meaning players who die are out of the game until the following round. If all the members of either team are eliminated or the object is retrieved then the round also ends with the winning team receiving a point. The mode is generally played with numerous rounds on each map and the team with the specified amount of wins according to the server wins the match.

Behind Enemy Lines

In Behind Enemy Lines, players are automatically assigned a team of either Axis or Allied. The Allied team is "behind the lines". There are just a few Allied players who must evade the Axis and survive as long as possible. Staying alive for a certain amount of time adds points to your score. The Axis must hunt down the Allies via compass markers and eliminate them. When an Axis player successfully finds and kills one of the Allied team, the player switches teams, and the hunter becomes the hunted. The winner is the first player to reach the specified point’s threshold, or has the most points when time runs out.

Search & Destroy

In Search & Destroy, players split into attacking and defending teams. Players who are killed will not respawn until the following round. A round ends when all the players of one team have been eliminated or an objective has been completed. The winning team will receive a point and totaled up at the end to determine the winner if played over multiple rounds.

The objective for the attackers is to plant a time bomb on a compass directed target. The bomb starts its countdown once planted next to the target. The defenders must protect the object either by keeping the bomb from being planted or defusing it while it is counting down. All maps have two separate objects which can be attacked although only one bomb may be planted.

Headquarters

In Headquarters, teams will be set out to capture radios which are randomly distributed in a map. A radio is captured by either standing, kneeling or laying by it when no enemies are nearby. The team who captured the radio holds it and gains points per second (time and point rate can be changed). When the opposing team destroys the radio or 4.5 minutes is up a new neutral radio appears elsewhere on the map. The winner is the team with the most points when time runs out.

This creates "mini-bases" or headquarters in which one side will capture the radio and attempt to protect it by any means necessary. Given the fact that most radios are placed in locations ranging from an open field to abandoned homes, the defenders must come up with creative locations to settle in while the offensive coordinates their attack.

Upon being killed a player may have to wait up to 40 seconds to respawn (known as reinforced) depending on the time they are killed during the constant 45 second reinforcement countdown (being killed within the first 5 seconds a player is typically awarded another spawn). However if a radio is captured or destroyed the countdown is automatically reset with everyone "reinforced". This waiting period encourages players to be more focused on gaining points and protecting their radio (as opposed to simply running around and killing opponents) as well as promoting teamwork.

Headquarters was added into the game with the version 1.2 patch.

Starter Guide

Call of Duty is a FPS that takes place during WWII. The character played will be an infantryman starting with a pistol and will progress through the game picking up advanced weapons in the forms of machine guns, rifles and bazookas. The game is linear in the fact that once an objective is completed it is advised of the next objective by your squad leader and you progress through with your squad. There is no confusion of where to go next or what to do next.

In multiplayer, the game plays the same way as single player. Depending on what game mode you play there will be certain objectives that must be completed to win the game. This is best done by coordinating with your team as it will be team based. If you’re not a fan of team based modes then deathmatch will be for you which will just be an all out firefight with everyone.

Call of Duty Multiplayer Etiquette

  1. Do not Team Kill
  2. Do not Chat Spam
  3. Do not swear in the chat
  4. Do not Team Stack
  5. Do not camp for a long time

Player's Guide

Team Squad

To survive in Call of Duty you will need to take advantage of your squad. They will help you fight the enemy by providing covering fire and helping you progress through the levels. Follow the squad leader and listen to his instructions as they will progress the missions and help you when needed.

Cover

Call of Duty is not a spray and pray game and playing it like so will not get you far in the game especially on the harder difficulties. Use cover to your advantage as it is very important to staying alive. By using the lean commands you will be able to see around walls, doors, windows and any other obstacle you may come across. This will be very handy for your progression throughout the game.

Stance

Call of Duty gives you the chance of crouching and lying prone on the ground. Take advantage of these stances throughout the game as they are given for a reason. Don't just rely on standing tall as you'll be easy to shoot down.

Be Mobile

Move Move Move. Never stay situated in one location whether it be to reload, regroup or getting your health replenished. Staying in one location will make you vulnerable to enemies who may discover your location. Especially if you start hearing artillery/mortar firing off in the background.

Be Thorough

When clearing buildings make sure you search every room and floor level. Enemies will lie in wait for the prime opportunities for a mistake so don’t let your guard down as the last thing you'll want is to be killed from behind.

Reloading

Every time you have a firefight your ammo clip will reduce. Don’t wait for the clip to run out before it auto reloads. Manually reload the weapon every time after you have a firefight as you do not want to go into one with 3 bullets left and wasting time reloading whilst the enemy has a perfect opportunity to take vengeance.
