Day of Defeat: Source

Day of Defeat: Source (DoD:S) is a popular team-based multiplayer WW2 first person shooter. The game is the successor the Half-Life mod Day of Defeat. The game focuses around the conflict between the US Army (Allies) and the Wehrmacht (German Armed Forces). DoD:S was the first Source game released that used HDR (High dynamic range rendering) and as such offer great visuals.

Gameplay

Day of Defeat: Source is very similar to many other team-based FPS games out on the market. Once you have logged into a server you select your team US Army or Wehrmacht and then select a “roll-out”. Unlike its more popular cousin Counter-strike there is no cash required to purchase your weapons you simply choose what your “Main” weapon is and are then given side-arms / grenades based upon this main choice.

Each team has similar roll-outs the only thing differing is the weapons themselves, for example the US Army have a Rifleman “class” who starts with the M1 Garand, 2 x rifle grenades and a M1918 trench knife, the Wehrmacht Rifleman “class” instead gets the Mauser Karabiner 98 Kurz, 2 x rifle grenades and Entrenchment spade

Capture & Hold

When Day of Defeat: Source was initially released, there was only one game mode. “Capture & Hold” As the name suggests, the goal is to capture strategic points around the map and defend points that you already own, the ultimate goal for each map is to have one team capture all the points.

Roughly a year after release the developers added in new maps with different objectives. Similar in design to the “Capture & Hold” maps these scenario’s had the teams trying to bomb objectives or defend the objectives.

While there is only 2 different gameplay modes the game offers a lot of diversity through the different maps or scenarios. Each map generally will have 2 or 3 different routes a player can take to get to a strategic point / objective and you also have certain points in the maps which bottleneck slow the player down. Add into the fact each time you die you can re-spawn with a different “class” there is a heap of different options to try. For example having difficulty with a sniper covering a long open area, you could try going as the Assault class and using a smoke grenade, or you could try going as the Rocket class and offensively removing them.

Starter Guide

In DoD:S it is very simple to get started, jump on a Public Server select a team, (if unsure simply press 0 and you will be auto-assigned). Then select a class to play with (for beginners I would suggest Assault / Support classes). Follow your team-mates to a particular objective and shoot anyone who doesn’t look like your team-mates. Below are some general beginner tips for Day of Defeat.

  1. Try not to run around aimlessly, this will draw attention to yourself and make you perfect sniper fodder. Brace yourself when moving around corners, and always assume that some thing is around the order waiting to frag you!
  2. This is a team game, so you may as well work as one if you want to win. Keep in mind, you are more likely to stay alive if you stick together then try to play this solo.
  3. Speak with your team members, let them know where the enemy are so they can avoid death and hopefully overcome those spotted.

Player's Guide

Weapon Recoil

As with many FPS shooters these days, realism with weapons is often imbedded into the game physics. Which means that holding down the trigger when attempting to shoot a target is less effective the further away they are. When attempting to shoot a target, unless point blank - try and use burst fire as opposed to holding down your trigger button. When running - this will also worsen the weapon recoil and effectively cause less accuracy again.

Each gun has it's own recoil attributes, so it is recommended that you practice with each gun.

Sniping

There are three main criteria points for successful sniping. Good sight of the enemy, a position in which you cannot be sneaked up on, and positioning that allows for you not to be seen/revealed easily by your victims/enemy snipers.

There will be times where an enemy player does get the sneak up on you, this is the perfect time to utilise a side arm in this event, as the un-scoped use of your sniper rifle can be verr ineffective in this situation, to say the least.

Patching Information

In order to play any Counter-Strike based game from Valve, you will need to download an install the Steam Client. Steam will effectively manage all of your Valve games (CS:S/DoD:S etc) - but will also patch and update games automatically which removes the need to manually download patches - which is common amongst other gaming titles.

If you attempt to connect to a server in which the map you do not already have, your client will automatically download the map and launch once completed.
