Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2 (BF2) is a first person shooter set in the modern theatre of war. The player can play by himself against the computer, but it is mainly played online against other people. The game was published by Electronic Arts and is the third game out of four games so far. It was released in late June of 2005. The previous Battlefield titles were Battlefield 1942 (set in World War 2), Battlefield Vietnam (set in the Vietnam War), Battlefield 2, and Battlefield 2142 (set in the future). Players can choose to play 3 factions: United States Marine Corps, People's Liberation Army, and the fictional Middle East Coalition. The game is currently rated MA15+.
Gameplay
There are two main game modes, Conquest and Cooperative. The objective of Conquest (where players are ranked and can earn new weapons) is to reduce the opposing team's "tickets" to zero before your team’s “tickets” reach zero. This can be accomplished by capturing flags (which is also a spawn point for the controlling team) and/or killing players on the opposing team. The team with less than half of the total number of flags under their possession will have their tickets gradually diminish. However, if a team has no flags left and all of the team players die, their ticket count will instantly go to zero, causing them to lose.
The player can enter various vehicles (such as tanks, helicopters, planes, jeeps, boats, etc) and drive/pilot them around the map, as well as go on foot. The player has a choice of seven classes of infantry they can be, which can be changed when re-spawning, or picking up another players gear. The classes are Spec Ops, Sniper, Assault, Support, Engineer, Medic and Anti-Tank.
Starter Guide
Here is some basic information for those who are just starting to play BF2, without any previous FPS experience.
Basic Controls
These are the basic controls for playing BF2, there are several more controls not listed, however a full list and ability to customise these are in the options interface.
W- move forward
S- move backward
A- Move sideways left
D- Move sideways right
E- Use object
Space Bar- Jump
Left mouse button- Primary fire
Right mouse button- Secondary fire
Mouse Movement- Controls where you point your gun
Basic Gameplay
To shoot, aim using your mouse and click (or click and hold) the left mouse button. The longer you hold down the button (ie, the long you shoot) the less accurate you are. To enter a vehicle, press the use button (E). The same buttons apply, however the mouse looks around, and the keys A & D turn the vehicle left and right respectively.
To capture a flag, you must eliminate the enemies around the flags area and stay in the area yourself until the flag is capture (you should see a bar indication the progress).
Player's Guide
Players form squads where they can team up and move around the map as a team, with each squad having a leader, giving them directions where to go.
The commander is a position where he can order all the different squads to do things, as well as send in artillery, ammo drops and arial surveillance. To become a commander, there is a vote, where the commander is elected by his fellow soldiers.
When attacking someone in vehicles, I find that the best attack is from behind, where the weakest armour is located, or when attacking aircraft, shoot at the engines.
Global Ranking
The main difference between BF2 and other FPS is that there is a global ranking system. When playing on a ranked server, a record/log of a players achievements in the form of kills, weapon efficiency, and class skill use are assigned points which upon reaching certain amounts, allows the player to advance ranking from Private all the way to General. When ascending through the ranks, players will be designated unlocks of non-standard weapons and equipment.
There is an option within the game's interface to see point progress and current field rank, however there is also a detailed website that you can use to track your player's progress and Global rank, which is BF2S.com.
